This project was about creating alternative gallery guides to the displays at Tate Modern. Adapting and repurposing established formats, from booklets to audio guides, as well as exploring new ways of engagement through performative technologies. The project addressed the museum’s role in narrating its displays and opened up new readings by bringing personal and social contexts and associations to the exhibitions.
Tate provided us with a space in the Tate Exchange on the fifth floor of the new switch house building. From there the students went out and distributed their guides to the public in the specific galleries that their guides related to. The Tate Exchange operated as a base where the public could come and see all of the gallery guides at once and we were able to map the various guides and interventions across the galleries.
